INTRODUCTION

"Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not upon thine OWN UNDERSTANDING."   Prov. 3:5

This is a most blessed quotation! This would serve as a text for this message, even though we have titled it THE BIRTH OF REASON. Leaning upon our own understanding or trusting God when His Word seems so far from our reasoning - this is an age-old dilemma. It started in the Garden of Eden and it has never ceased or even let up through all these centuries. It is with us as much today as it ever was with those who have gone before. Kings and potentates, prince and pauper, prophet and priest, and saint and sinner, all without exception have known it in the valley of decision. Ignoring it is the cause of all our defeats, and obedience to it the root of all our victories.

Reason opposes FAITH. Someone has said: "REASON IS FAITH'S GREAT ENEMY!" If reason is such an enemy, what really is it and when did it have it's start?

REASON...WHAT IS IT?

Reason may have several definitions but as we are using it in this lesson we are considering it to be "human ability to evaluate acts or ideas, etc., in the mind and reach a conclusion based on that evaluation." That does not sound too bad, does it? Well, human reasoning had a FALL and CANNOT be trusted. This we must prove to you by the Word of God. And right then and there the arguments begin. The human mind says, "Why let God be the Judge? I am well able to decide for myself; no need for God to make decisions for me and no need for me to accept what He has said on any subject. I will figure it out for myself and make my own decisions.” Let’s go back to that fateful day in the Garden when all this started.

THE GARDEN OF EDEN

"And God planted a garden...in Eden, and there He put the man He had formed...and He planted every plant...good for food and pleasant to the sight: the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil...and the Lord God...put the man He had formed in the garden to dress it and keep it. And God commanded the man saying, Of every tree in the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the TREE OF THE KNOWLEDGE of GOOD and EVIL thou shall NOT EAT of IT; for in the day that you eat thereof, thou shall SURELY DIE." Gen. 2:8-17
