The Pledge of Allegiance

Francis Bellamy, a Baptist minister, wrote the original Pledge of Allegiance in 1892. It was first published in the September 8, 1892, issue of Youth's Companion, a weekly magazine then published in Boston. Bellamy was chairman of a subcommittee of the National Education Association and developed a flag-raising ceremony and flag salute to accompany the Pledge. His original pledge was:

I pledge allegiance to my flag

and the Republic for which it stands,

one nation indivisible

with liberty and justice for all.

In 1924 the National Flag Conference, under the leadership of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the American Legion, changed the words of the Pledge to "the flag of the United States of America." In 1954 the words "under God" were added by an act of Congress.

I pledge allegiance to the flag

of the United States of American

and the Repubic for which it stands

one nation under God

indivisible

with liberty and justice for all.
